As Independence Day nears, the City of Mission Viejo is reminding residents of the proper and respectful way to retire an American flag. The United States Flag Code outlines that when a flag becomes worn, faded, or damaged beyond repair, it should be retired in a dignified manner, traditionally by ceremonial burning conducted with respect and solemnity.
For many residents, performing a retirement ceremony on their own may not be feasible. To support the community, Mission Viejo provides designated drop‑off locations where residents may leave one or two flags for proper retirement by trained volunteers. Due to the time and care required for each ceremony, these sites cannot accept more than two flags per person, as larger quantities create a hardship on the volunteers who perform the retirements.
Drop‑off locations include:
- Mission Viejo Elks Lodge — A collection bin is located outside the front door for convenient drop‑off at any time.
- Mission Viejo City Hall — Indoor collection bin available during normal operating hours.
- Mission Viejo Library — Indoor collection bin available during normal operating hours.
Retiring a flag respectfully honors the symbol of our nation and the values it represents. Residents are encouraged to inspect their flags before the holiday and use the drop‑off bins if needed.
